DOMO
MUSIC FOR YOGA: This new age label knows about music for spiritual pursuits and shows their expertise in this set programmed for yoga whether you are on the mat or simply getting in touch behind you desk when it looks like no one is watching.  Well programmed set that is well made for opening the chakras and gives you the right sonic support for those times when it’s time to go within.  Smart work throughout.

HOLLYWOOD
BRIDGE TO TERABITHIA/soundtrack: It sounds like some singer/songwriter lite set but it’s the cleffer to an uplifting young adult movie and the cleffer is powered by celeb to the kiddie set like Hannah Montana and other kid friendly faces.  It’s a sure bet for the Radio Disney set and it certainly won’t drive you nuts when the kids play it over and over like Raffi did.

JAMES FILKINS
JAMES FILKINS/Borderline Normal: So, you’re the knowledgeable type.  You figured the Traverse City guitar scene wasn’t big enough to hold much more than John Wunsch, and you would generally be right, but Filkins is an up and comer that plays a different style of acoustic guitar than Wunsch so there’s room for both of them without a need for a shoot out.  Like the kind of guitar music label like Tompkins Square are rediscovering and letting flower, Filkins gently sees how far he can push the possibilities of guitar.  Falling under the realm of new age and NAC without swallowing the wishy washy elements of either, Filkins music is along the line of guitar miniatures that tell stories within themselves.  A delightful diversion with an attention to craft you don’t often see/hear.

STRANGER THAN FICTION: Will Farrell plays against type and holds his own against a well decorated cast showing he can play it straight and move well beyond low comedy mugging.  This dada tale about a writer who takes over a real person and makes him a character in her work in progress is one of those low key, witty laugh riots.  Aimed at adult tastes, this fish out of water tale turned on it’s head might wear it’s Kafkaesque roots on it’s sleeve, but it’s so deliciously off the wall that it’s almost a PBS pic for people that don’t like PBS pics.  You keep waiting for Farrell to break the fourth wall, but he contains himself and keeps in character, getting more and more demented but never going into schtick.  It’s nice to see the art of high brow laughers regaining it’s footing in such grand style.
