SIX DEGREES
MNO/Sessions Des Rosiers EP: Contemporary classical/jazzbo enjoys taking you on the journey as he pushes some new envelopes in his sonic experiments that try to open doors as well as ears.  A solid sonic adventure that gleefully mixmasters whatever his passing fancy at the moment may be into some wild stuff you have to hear to believe.

JEF STOTT/Souk Sonik: After working on video games and world beat players, Stott finally steps out with his own solo set and let’s you know straight away, he’s gong to give you everything and the kitchen sink as he plays along his merry way.  Fun of wild abandon, but not without discipline, Stott doesn’t waste you time as he takes you to sonic places you have only heard in dreams.  Step up for a wild ride.

AZAM ALI/Elysium Remixes: It was hard not to like the album these remixes originated from, and with that kind of ringing endorsement on the source material, it’s hard not to like the refashioning.   With a bunch of remixers that understand her middle Eastern fusion vibe and embellish it, this is gong to open her stuff to an even wider, appreciate audience.  High octane stuff throughout.

SHOCK TO THE SYSTEM: In the 90’s, there was a real flourishing of ethnic cinema.  A lot of it had mainstream aspirations, and did quite well in the direct to video arena, but it fell short at the theatrical level due that old bugaboo, trying to appeal to diver diverse audiences at the same time and pleasing neither.  Gay cinema now seems to be headed toward the mainstream.  This gay themed pic, with a strong political undercurrent has strong mainstream aspirations.  Maybe because cable funding is in the mix it has an easier time of coming closer than the ethnic pics of the 90’s.  Maybe it’s easier for the mainstream to grasp because more mainstream families have a gay member thee days than an ethnic member.  Whatever the reason, this mystery/thriller with cable friendly faces does a fine job of hitting the mark.  With a few twists the mainstream mystery fan wouldn’t see coming, and without the threat to the status quo that a “Brokeback” has in it’s baggage, this well crafted pic could easily score under the radar.  Hate to break the news to you, but people are all the same and this is a well made mystery.  If you have any preconceived stigmas, let them go while the blood is flowing and open yourself up to a new series.
