SIX DEGREES
BACKSPIN-Six Degrees 10 Year Anniversary Project/various: The label’s front line world beaters do their take on a fave rock tune, whether an oldie or something of more recent vintage. It’s a nice bridge release that brings several different tastes together under one tent to open everyone’s ears to something new. Wonderfully eclectic date that shows the label has lost nothing off it’s fast ball as it enters a new decade.

JOHN MELLENCAMP/Freedom’s Road: In his first new studio record in 5 years, we find the former Mr. Cougar showing us how heartland rockers sound when they grow up and have gone through all the Jack & Diane changes that life throws their way in the course of same. Very much a mature rocker, still tilling the same fields but with a very much different plow, he has actually found the key to making current state of the art mature rock for AARP members that still have their teeth. Far from being a phone it in/paint by numbers heritage rock release, Mellencamp is still keeping it relevant and rocking. Pretty much, this set sets a new standard.

LUCKY LOUIE: Should be titled “Who’s the Boss Goes to Hell” as this updated version finds a ne’er do well under the thumb of his controlling, breadwinner wife while he tries, sort of, to run the house. Taking the standard sitcom conventions and grinding them into dust for later reconstitution, this show is a wild ride for cynical tastes looking for a socially acceptable way to vent some venom. If you get into some real pomo, detached irony, this is a bonanza of a series for you.
