COYOTE POETS OF THE UNIVERSE/Unmistakable Evidence: The Colorado contingent of the jam band world has the attendant mishagass that comes from their section of the world and with their third release, they’ve chosen to define themselves as ‘eclectic Americana’.  Why not?  This really is a crew you can’t give a label to.  Originally springing from an NPR broadcast that needed a crew that could deliver a sound that was something like the real left side of the 60’s felt like.  They might have spring from NPR, but they don’t wear the mode on their sleeve.  This genre busting crew has the chops to play about anything and are a special treat for the sonic lefty looking for some sonic adventure that is close to early Zappa in spirit.

SPENCER DURHAM/Much More than Words: Soulful, rocking Georgia white boy (he’s 18 years old) draws national attention with his multi-instrumental capabilities and shows the rest of the world that he has a bright future ahead of him with his second release.  Working with Randall Bramlett and his band, Durham delivers a wise performance that yo would expect from an older player with more flying time.  Don’t stick a fork in rock yet when there’s up and comers like this coming from places you don’t expect.

ROCK PAPER SCISSORS
VIEUX FARKA TOURE: And here’s the proof that they pass on the family business in the desert.  Ali Farka Toure’s son picks up the desert blues torch, adds his own elements but basically shows he learned his lessons well eating breakfast with the master every morning.  His debut features the final recordings of his late father and the torch is passed even though pop originally tried to discourage fille from going in to the family business.  With a little bit of tradition meeting the future, Toure opens the door on a career that feels like it will be as satisfying as his pop’s.  World beaters, start your engines.

ELAINE SILVER/Art of Peace: Folkie charmer Silver has left the folk and kid realms behind as she now travels the spiritual route hobnobbing with the creme of the spiritual crop like Marianne Williamson, Deepak Chopra etc.  Putting her folk and new age roots to good use as she travels along this road, her new songs offer more than feel good lip service to the quick fix faddist.  Going deep within herself and finding songs that reflect her beliefs, Silver will probably remain left of center and under the radar, but she will continue to fly high without getting burnt by the sun.  One of hose song sets that tastes good while it’s good for you.

ARTHUR DODGE/Perfect Face: It looks like there’s something in the water in the heartland again as ironic singer/songwriters are now springing from Lawrence KS., and their irony isn’t falling flat.  In this case, it’s not the cable tv effect, Dodge has the goods.  Falling somewhere into the singer/songwriter/Americana/folk-rock gap, Dodge is a clever writer with a friendly, lived in voice that makes his takes on life vignettes almost like homey visits, with a sly wink.  Currently bubbling under, it’s probably just a matter of time before Dodge is a hit in left of center Americana circles.
